| Guidelines |
A. The student must earn no less than a B for the final grade.
B. The student must be a junior or senior to receive the Articulation Certificate.
C. The student must enroll at the higher education institution within two years of high school graduation.
D. The student must present the certificate at the time of registration to receive credit for the course.

According to industry standards, students must master the following competencies
in Basic Engine Performance to receive credit:
1. Demonstrate professional automotive technician behavior, acceptable attendance
and demonstrate shop safety
2. Explain and demonstrate safety procedures
3. Explain internal combustion engine four-cycle theory
4. Perform battery load, starter draw and charging systems tests
5. Perform engine cranking and running vacuum test
6. Perform cylinder compression and leakage test
7. Perform cylinder power balance test
8. Diagnose unusual exhaust color/odor/sound
9. Explain emission control needs
10. Test PCV, EGR and EVAP and understand EFE and AIR systems
11. Analyze catalytic converter operation
12. Explain conventional and electronic ignition systems operations
13. Describe and measure pulse width, duty cycle and frequency
14. Test secondary ignition system
15. Replace spark plugs
16. Demonstrate safe fuel pressure testing techniques
17. Test magnetic pick-up and hall effect switch
18. Understand ignition timing
19. Replace ignition system pick-up sensor
20. Test electronic ignition system control unit
21. Test primary electronic ignition wiring harness and connectors
22. Adjust idle speed/minimum air flow
23. Replace air and fuel filters
24. Demonstrate proper use of scan tool for retrieval of codes
25. Perform an engine tune-up
26. Demonstrate ability to use service information system
